Library

Since its inception, IAS has shown interest in promoting academic values among its students by providing a space that invites students to investigate, study, work and recreate in the world of books. Because of this interest, our school has the largest school library in Cancun, with fully automated and structured services that support study plans and programs. These include book loans, databases, brochures, magazines, maps, etc.

There are two libraries on campus, one for kindergarten and primary and the other for middle and high school. Both have books in English and Spanish, and students may check out books, which encourages them to read at home and in school.

The kindergarten and primary library follows the National Reading Program established by the SEP. This is done by having a library on school grounds, having classroom libraries with books designated for each grade level, and having books which complement the curriculum and strengthen daily reading habits.

The middle and high school library, one of the most visited places in the community, annually provides over 8,500 loans and has over 12,200 visits to its catalog and online databases. It is a symbol of the school’s reading community.

Rules

Students have a limit on how many books they may check out from the library. They will not be allowed to get any new books, unless all books are returned. If a book is a lost, students must pay for the book or replace it. Teachers and parents are welcome to check out books as well.

DONATIONS

In order to keep adding titles to our collection, donations are accepted.

Cafeteria

IAS has a cafeteria in the middle and high school building which is run independently from the school.

Middle and high school students have access to it on a regular basis. Primary and kindergarten students are required to bring their own lunch.

However, the cafeteria does offer a “box lunch“ for them, which is brought right before lunch time.

Parents must call ahead to order and pay directly at the cafeteria.

Sports & Activities

Participation in sports is an integral part of student life. The objective of the athletic program is to facilitate the participation of students in activities outside the classroom, allowing them to develop cooperation skills, sportsmanship, and physical and mental skills.

Students are required to take physical education in kinder through ninth grade and can choose a sports class as an elective in grades 9-12.

Students have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular sports such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, and field hockey.

In addition to playing on school teams, our students have participated in national competitions in rowing, field hockey, tennis, soccer, swimming, and wind surf.

Technology

In IAS we recognize that technology and internet are part of our everyday life, and so it is essential to teach students how to use them correctly and responsibly. Our mission is based on a school wide commitment of continual growth and the wise application of technology as well as modeling responsible digital citizenship for our community. For this reason, a Responsible Use Policy has been created. The Policy guidelines apply to all digital devices and are linked to IAS Values.

Each academic level of schooling has a different focus:

Kindergarten focuses on learning and recognizing parts of a computer and their functions, as well as, the development of motor skills with the use of the mouse and the connection between the screen and mouse.

In Primary students will collaborate to integrate technology tools and skills to enhance learning for 21st century skills preparation. The school has a computer lab and ipads which are used in the classroom to aid in their learning experience.

Middle school centers around Microsoft office applications.

In High school students develop design skills using Adobe tools and programming.

Both Middle and High school students have access to ipads in the classroom, a computer lab equipped with MAC desktops and a library with MAC desktops as well. Internet service is provided for students who bring their laptops or tablets.

Health

Dra. Fabiola Velasco

The purpose of medical attention in school is to cover emergencies and illnesses that result during the day. In kinder and primary we will advise parents of the need for further attention as the doctor does not prescribe nor administer medication. The doctor is not responsible for administering medication from home. For middle and high school where most common ailments are colds headaches and stomach ache, the doctor has medicine available. If there is an accident the procedure follows the same as kinder and primary.

Kinder / Primary, Psychologist

Psychologist for kindergarten and primary The department of psychology is in charge of prevention and intervention techniques in situations related to human behaviour. Progress is achieved through an interdisciplinary approach between teachers, coordinators, parents and external therapists. We provide a variety of programs and prevention strategies such as:

1.- Values program K - 6th
2.- Educational orientation program (Kinder)
3.- Positive discipline program
4.- Red Ribbon Week

These programs are intended to offer guidance, information and to assist the child by developing conflict resolution skills which can be applied in everyday situations. The therapists observes, documents and informs how each child is developing social, academic and emotional skills throughout his academic development. Our department has a conflict resolution model that is applied at all levels starting preschool. This model provides guidelines for the students to look for solutions and empower them in daily situations.
